Round 3
Devised By Ian Newton
The third round of this years competition was held at the club on Tuesday
21st June. Conditions were good except for the high wind gusting
quite strongly.
Due to the high wind speed it was decided
that only suitable competitions for the conditions would be placed in the
draw. As a result only 2 competitions were 'in the hat', one devised
by Ian Walker and the other by myself. Wendy made the draw and mine
was chosen. The rules and task were simple as detailed below but the
conditions made the attainment more difficult. Barrie's model was
excellent under the circumstances as he took off and almost hovered above
the landing point riding the wind. His timing was very close in both
rounds as was his proximity to the landing spot. For the rest of us,
the rounds were more challenging! Having climbed to the height we
felt necessary and cutting the power the flight became interesting.
When flying downwind the planes traveled extremely quickly but on turning
into wind it was as though a brick wall had been hit. A lot of
height had to be lost to gain the speed to make forward progress. As
a result, although in general everyone had times very close to the 30
seconds required, the distance from the 'spot' often fell well short
giving Ron some long walks in pacing out the distances! However,
there was only one flight where the 10 second penalty for having to
re-apply power had to be invoked. Fortunately only one model was
damaged during the evening. A substitute plane was permitted since
the objective of the events is mainly to have fun - shame he scored so
well though :-)
All in all another enjoyable evening.
Hopefully next month the competition night will be a little calmer!
The rules were:
1.
The competition will take place with 2 rounds
2.
Take off and take as long as necessary to reach your chosen
height.
3.
Cut power and glide to make landing
4.
The landing must be as close to 30 seconds as possible and
as close to the marker as possible
5.
Repeat for further round
ScoScoring
1.
Any application of power after the declared height has been
reached and power has been cut will result in 10 seconds being added /
subtracted from time (subtracted if landing was in less than 30 secs,
added if landing was in more than 30 secs
2.
0.5 secs per full metre (pace) from the designated landing
spot will be added / subtracted from the time as per above.
3.
Points will be awarded based on competitors adjusted times
being the nearest to 30 secs.
4.
1 extra point will be awarded to the one nearest the landing
marker
5.
The points from each round will then be added together
6.
The final order based on these points will determine the
final points in the competition as normal.
